Between Tree Patterns and Conjunctive Queries: Is There Tractability beyond Acyclicity?
نویسندگان
چکیده
In static analysis of queries over trees in the presence of schemas, there is an exponential complexity gap between conjunctive queries (CQs, positive existential first-order formulae without disjunction) and tree patterns (tree-like acyclic CQs). Motivated by applications in XML data management, we consider various restrictions of CQs that bring their complexity down to that of tree patterns. Most importantly, we show that vertical tree patterns can be costlessly extended with full horizontal CQs over children. We also consider restricted classes of schemas and show that under disjunction-free schemas the complexity of static analysis sometimes drops dramatically.

Vertically Acyclic Conjunctive Queries over Trees
Seeking a manageable subclass of conjunctive queries over trees that would reach beyond tree patterns, we find that vertical acyclicity of queries is sufficient to guarantee the same complexity bounds for static analysis problems, as those enjoyed by tree patterns.
متن کاملCombined Tractability of Query Evaluation via Tree Automata and Cycluits (Extended Version)
We investigate parameterizations of both database instances and queries that make query evaluation fixed-parameter tractable in combined complexity. We introduce a new Datalog fragment with stratified negation, intensional-clique-guarded Datalog (ICG-Datalog), with linear-time evaluation on structures of bounded treewidth for programs of bounded rule size. Such programs capture in particular co...
متن کاملCombined Complexity of Answering Tree-like Queries in OWL 2 QL
Introduction The OWL 2 QL ontology language [11], based upon the description logic DL-LiteR, is considered particularly well suited for applications involving large amounts of data. While the data complexity of querying OWL 2 QL knowledge bases is well understood, far less is known about combined complexity of conjunctive query (CQ) answering for restricted classes of conjunctive queries. By co...
متن کاملComputing Complete Answers to Queries in the Presence of Limited Access Patterns (Revision)
In data applications such as information integration, there can be limited access patterns to relations, i.e., binding patterns require values to be specified for certain attributes in order to retrieve data from a relation. As a consequence, we cannot retrieve all tuples from these relations. In this article we study the problem of computing the complete answer to a query, i.e., the answer tha...
متن کاملComplete Answers to Queries in the Presence of LimitedAccess Patterns ( Extended
We consider the problem of computing the complete answer to a query when there is limited access to relations, i.e., when binding patterns require values to be speciied for certain attributes in order to retrieve data from a relation. This problem is common in information-integration systems , where heterogeneous sources have diverse and limited query capabilities. A query is stable if for any ...
